Picture-in-picture or split screen? Choosing a dual camera layout

Pick picture-in-picture when one camera is the subject and the other is a reaction. Pick split screen when both sides carry equal weight. That covers most decisions, but the reason behind it is worth understanding, because the two layouts do very different things to your source frames — and the difference is measurable, not aesthetic.

DualCam offers three: picture-in-picture, split top and bottom, and split left and right. All three can be changed while recording, so the cost of choosing wrong is low. The cost of framing wrong is not.

The crop is the real difference

A phone camera produces a 16:9 frame. Rotated upright for a vertical video, that frame is 9:16. A vertical canvas of 1080×1920 is also 9:16, which means that when one camera fills the whole canvas, the source fits exactly and nothing is thrown away. That is the picture-in-picture main frame: a clean, uncropped image.

Split screen is a different story, because each camera now has to fill half a vertical canvas, and half of a vertical rectangle is not the shape a camera frame comes in.

Left and right split: about a quarter goes off each side

Half of a 1080×1920 canvas, split vertically, is 540×1920 — an extremely tall, narrow slot. Fitting a 9:16 source into it without distorting the image means cropping horizontally, and the arithmetic works out to keeping the middle half of the frame. Roughly 25% disappears off the left and another 25% off the right. Faces near the edge of frame will be cut in half.

Top and bottom split: about a quarter goes off top and bottom

Half of the same canvas, split horizontally, is 1080×960 — a landscape slot. Now the crop runs the other way: the full width survives and roughly a quarter is trimmed from the top and a quarter from the bottom. This layout is much friendlier to a normal head-and-shoulders shot, which is why it tends to be the better split for talking to camera.

Picture-in-picture: the inset gets cropped, the main frame does not

The floating window in DualCam has three size steps and three shapes. The tall rounded shape keeps the same proportions as the viewfinder, so it crops the least. The square and circle shapes are true 1:1 on the canvas, which means they crop the inset the most — they look great for a face, and they are a poor choice for anything wide.

Choosing by what you are shooting

  • Reaction to something visual — picture-in-picture, back camera large, your face in a corner. The thing being reacted to needs the resolution; your face does not.
  • Two-person conversation on one phone — split. Equal space signals equal importance, and neither person looks like an afterthought.
  • Walking vlog with narration — picture-in-picture, small inset. You are commentary, the street is the content.
  • Before-and-after or comparison — top and bottom split, because the eye compares stacked images more easily than side-by-side ones on a narrow vertical screen.
  • Tutorial where hands do the work — picture-in-picture with the back camera large, or a top/bottom split if the explanation matters as much as the demonstration.

Framing rules that apply to both

Centre everything that matters. This single habit survives any layout change, and it is the only reliable defence against a crop you did not plan for.

Watch the corners in picture-in-picture. The inset sits in one of four corners with a small margin, and it will cover whatever is underneath it. If your subject is in the bottom right of the back camera frame, do not park the inset there.

Remember that changing layout mid-take changes the crop mid-take. This is a creative tool, not a problem — cutting from a full-frame street shot to a split as you turn to camera is a real edit, performed live — but the framing has to work in both states.

A word on canvas height

DualCam offers two canvas heights at a fixed 1080 width: 1920 for standard 9:16, and 2340 to fill a modern iPhone screen edge to edge. The taller canvas is more immersive on a phone, but it is taller than the source frame, so a full-frame camera image has to give up a little width to fill it. If preserving the widest possible view matters more to you than filling the screen, use 9:16.

Common follow-up questions

Can I change layout while recording?

In DualCam, yes. Layout, the picture-in-picture corner, its size, its shape and the colour filter can all be changed mid-take, and the recorded file follows the change immediately, because the preview and the recording are the same rendered frame.

Which layout looks best on short-video platforms?

All three are vertical, so all three fit. Picture-in-picture reads best in a fast feed because there is one obvious main image; splits ask the viewer to look at two things at once, which works when the two things are related and fails when they are not.

Does the inset window have to be in a corner?

In DualCam it snaps to one of the four corners. You drag it and it settles into the nearest one, which keeps the composition tidy and predictable rather than letting it drift somewhere that will collide with platform UI overlays.
